Students from the Malave Leadership Academy and other selected student leaders from across CUNY attended a remarkable leadership development event and talk by Chancellor Emeritus Matthew Goldstein in November. The Richard Harris Terrace at the Borough of Manhattan Community had 80 students present and eager to hear the Chancellor Emeritus’ thoughts on what constitutes quality leadership.
In his talk, the Chancellor Emeritus outlined three key components for leadership–having vision, taking chances and working with quality people. These things had helped him greatly during his time as Chancellor, he said, a position he held from 1999 through 2013. The Chancellor Emeritus also took time to discuss former Vice Chancellor Ernesto Malave, the namesake of the Leadership Academy as well as his own experiences as a CUNY student. Students also heard remarks from BMCC’s President Antonio Perez and Vice President for Student Affairs Marva Craig. The event was the second installment of the CUNY Leaders on Leadership series. The first occurred last spring and featured CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor and Secretary of the Board, Jay Hershenson. The next CUNY Leaders on Leadership forum is scheduled for spring 2014.
